Personal: How Obamacare Has Affected Me

President ObamaIn 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare) was passed by the Democrat controlled Congress and transformed the US Insurance and Healthcare industries from a free market system with less government control to one of much tighter government control.  Many of its supporters hailed the far sweeping legislation as the next step towards a universal healthcare system (read Single Payer) that would allow all Americans to get the health care they need. Unintended Consequence of the Bergdahl Swap

Bergdahl Prisoner SwapYesterday, I made a post on my thoughts regarding Sergeant Bergdahl.  I focused primarily on the issues regarding his service and the investigation of his actions during his deployment, and the findings that are supposedly coming.  The other side of this, the five Gitmo detainees exchanged for his release, has now come to the forefront, and again, not in a good way for the Administration. My Thoughts on Sgt Bergdahl

Sgt BergdahlSergeant Bergdahl was captured by the Islamic extremist group Haqqani Network and kept in Pakistan for about 5 years before he was released after the Obama administration arranged for a prisoner swap for five detainees in Guantanamo.  The interesting thing here is that the Administration had touted the service of Sergeant Bergdahl as being honorable and worthy of the transaction to be brought back to the United States.  “No man is left behind”, a phrase commonly used among soldiers and marines to signify the lengths each member will go to ensure each member is returned to the homeland in dignity, something President Obama stated during the speech announcing Bergdahl’s trade. Can’t make this up.. Josh Barro hates stay at home parents.

jiFfMJosh Barro, an opinion writer for the New York Times writes:

When we hire people to come into our homes to do these things, the labor is counted as part of the economy and subject to tax. If I pay you to watch my child and you pay me to watch your child, we both owe income tax. If you and I each watch our own children, the I.R.S. collects nothing — even though we have done substantially the same work for the same benefit. This tax preference for housework over paid work creates a significant distortion: Some people (mostly women) choose to stay home when, absent tax considerations, they might work outside the home instead.

This is in regards to President Obama’s speech about the proposed tax credit for working families for up to $3000.  Conservatives have criticized the plan because the tax credit would not apply to families where one spouse is a stay at home parent.

In Josh’s bizarro world, because the other parent is not working, the government is unable to collect the taxes and so, by default, that is a tax credit.  He expands on that to suggest that there are larger implications because the stay at home parent might do home repairs, remodels, and other work that could go to contractors, depriving the IRS, and the Government out of revenues.

Let me see if I understand this:  If you want to be a stay at home parent to raise your kid, this is a tax credit, but also a detriment to the economy because the stay at home parent is not generating income that could be used to pay for other services?

Barro Economics?  More like Bozo economics.

2016 – Race for the White House

If I had to make a list (and obviously I am going to) of who I consider Presidential contenders, here is what it is:

  1. Scott Walker
  2. Rick Perry
  3. Mitt Romney
  4. Ted Cruz
  5. Rand Paul
  6. Marco Rubio
  7. Chris Christie
  8. Ben Carson
  9. Sarah Palin
  10. Jeb Bush

Few things to note:

This list includes individuals who I believe will be involved in the primary race.

The order is my preference to win.  This is just the first, off the cuff list.  Don’t take offense if your candidate is not where you think it should be.

This list is subject to change and I will update accordingly.

Finally, I will make comments about each, if they appear in the days news, and about how I feel they contributed to their chances of winning and where I would stand.  This list will update weekly on Sunday’s.  Daily updates will occur as needed for specific candidates.
