George Washington borrowed The Law of Nations by Emer de Vattel on October 5, 1789 from the New York Library. It was missing from a ledger of books catalogued between 1789-1792.  A copy of the book was returned to the library in 2010. The theoretical fines the Former President would have been assessed amount to roughly $300,000.
