Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was the only woman in US history to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.  She was awarded the honor in 1865 after General William Sherman and General H. Thomas recommended her for it.  President Lincoln had signed her testimonial.

Later in 1917, she was stripped of the award due to lack of evidence to support her eligibility to be awarded.

  1. I had to look her up, and I have to wonder if she was stripped of her MoH because of her high profile in the Suffrage movement.

Thankfully, her award was reinstated officially in 1977. And she didn’t give the medal back, either.
