He’s in motion.
It’s a little over 2 and half hours from Burlington to Des Moines where the Iowa State Fair is in full swing. If he drove/rode to and from on the same day, he would have been sitting for more than 5 hours in a vehicle.
The State Fair is close to 450 acres in size and would require some walking. In his interview with the Hawkeye.com, he shared that the new job doesn’t require a lot of walking. Of course, if you read the article, you’ll notice a whole lot of Schmalfeldt’s past – the years 2011 to when he was hired in 2019 – is conveniently missing. Walking and traveling during that period of time was considered to be hazardous, and on occasion, “life-threatening” (his words.)
Sadly, two turkeys were forced to be in one of the photographs.
I guess he’s not worried about getting charged with disability fraud…but aside from stupidity, I don’t see why.

Astounding chutzpah.

Maybe hubris. The element of foolishness is certainly there, and the inherent gutsiness of chutzpah seems not to be.
I don’t believe he perceives a danger, as opposed to choosing to ignore it.
