January is named after Janus, the god with two faces, one looking forward and one looking backward.

According to The Roman historian Suetonius, Augustus closed the doors to Janus’ temple several time during his reign. The significance of that was twofold. First, it meant that the Roman Empire was at peace on all fronts. Second, it had only been done a couple of times since the beginning of the Roman Empire up until Augustus reign.
