Socialism was once tried in the United States in the early 19th century. It failed within a few years.

Its ancestor (communalism) was tried much farther back, the Plymouth Colony was founded as a collective enterprise and the first year the colony almost failed. Then they divided the land in to individual plots for individual effort and Lo and Behold, they got bumper crops, enough for a Thanksgiving feast…. It ain’t about turkey, or Squanto, or that bumf. Thanksgiving is about the triumph of individualism over collectivism.
