In 1992, a crate containing some 29,000 rubber ducks, frogs, turtles and beavers fell off a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean from the US to Hong Kong. Scientists have mapped the locations of where the toys have washed up or appeared in various places and have used the data to improve their understanding of the ocean currents.
I spent a few summers in college plotting where drift bottles came ashore based on the post cards that were sent back. I knew the west coast of Ireland pretty well by the time I was done. We’re still not sure how one ended up in Dubai though. Prank? Or fouled on a ship’s hull?
