I was watching on this day back then…
I was a teenage intern/DJ at a small taped format radio station, and we had got the heads up that this MTV thing might blow up big with teens around the country. The station manager asked us to watch it for ideas on how to improve our station.
The rest is history.
I had no idea who The Buggles were at the time…
But every time I hear “Video Killed The Radio Star,” I smile…
(that and Wall of Vodoo’s “Mexican Radio)
😉
Shame that MTV doesn’t even play music anymore.

I was watching, too!
IIRC – the “Land Down Under” video by Men at Work was one of the first to air on MTV.

I had two Chinese roommates at the time. One [Xiang-Li] was the third child of a “landlord” family, so I assume they had some kind of real pull back in China.
Anyway, a few days after MTV launched I got back to the apartment to see the biggest tv I’d ever seen and two speakers about twice the size of dorm fridges and enough videotaping equipment for a small news operation. Xiang-Li then proceed tape MTV 24 hours a day/7 days a week and ship the tapes back to China.
I kept waiting for the cops to bust in and arrest us all. Never happened.

Bootlegging MTV was big. I remember my roommate in college used to do the same thing for his friend who couldn’t afford cable.

And ironically, radio is still here. MTV, not so much.

I saw a concert of Pat a year or so ago on some cable channel and she was pretty proud that one of her early hits was the second song played.

First band to have a video played twice…
The Who- You’d Better You Bet
A couple of my favorite bands… REO Speedwagon and Styx were 9th and 10th… but the REO video only played a few seconds because of a technical glitch.

This isn’t my favorite video, but I cannot think of this group or this song without thinking about MTV.
Great new “Sonoran Conservative” blog feature, MJ! Big fun!

I didn’t get to watch MTV until a few years later, what with living in Ireland and not being able to afford a TV or cable. So for me, MTV is always associated with https://youtu.be/lAD6Obi7Cag
