In the sentences immediately before that statistic, they mention the abnormally high suicide rate of those people in jail, and then fail to mention how many of those 738 deaths are suicides. That is an almost Schmalfledt level of poor journalism right there.
That doesn’t excuse the poor treatment by the criminal justice system, but it does hide the actual scope of the problem.
Yeah. Jail is typically where you wait for arraignment, bail, etc.
Convicts go to prison.
