Brian Williams: Tales of Courage in Combat

Brian Williams is the anchor for NBC Nightly News for over 10 years.  He is an award winning journalist and anchor who has a great reputation among his peers.  However, it seems, that during a mission in Iraq where he was aboard a US Army helicopter embedded with the troops, he somehow got confused about his helicopter being shot at by an RPG and AK-47, even claiming to be hit and forced down.

Let me see if I understand this:  You’re already having a great career.  You are going with the finest Army in the world, and when something happens in your proximity to witness, you necessarily need to insert yourself into the story?  What makes you think this was a good thing?

His explanation, and subsequent apology, leaves a lot to be desired.  He PROMOTED this story for over ten years, even discussing it with David Letterman on the Late Show.  So when US soldiers recently started firing back, he seemed to run for cover and attributed it to him being “confused”, conflating facts that happened to another aircraft and applied it to his own.

Sorry, Brian.  Had you been in a military helicopter taking fire, and having been hit by an RPG, it would have been far easier to remember details.  The soldiers who experienced it directly, you have overshadowed their bravery.  Sad that you had to perpetuate this for so long.  Amazing how journalism is supposed to work:  Report the facts as they are, and do little to be in the story.  I would guess a story like this works better when you are at your fancy press dinners and social gatherings among the elite.

I would suggest making a seriously large donation to one of the many military support groups to genuinely prove your apology is sincere.  And perhaps, maybe in your future reporting, you perhaps, portray the military in a better light considering how disrespectful this administration is towards the military.
